Groundhog Day Review Old Vic

groundhog day old vic review
The sweetest Musical you’ll see all summer.

Andy Karl (playing Phil Connors) is wildly energetic in this blueprint of movie-to-musical brilliance by Australian man-of-the-moment Tim Minchin. Despite the repetition of the entire plot (a man awakening the repeat the same day, every day) which may otherwise bore musical theatre audiences, the execution is flawless and avoids any moment of wandering thoughts. It’s often hard to adapt movies – some work, some don't (Fatal Attraction, anyone?), yet Groundhog Day delivers two hours of catchy tunes, engaging characters and quick humour. In short, this is a five star wonder worthy of an immediate West End transfer in addition to its confirmed Broadway production! Go see it. Now.

Today is a good day! Here's the first production shot of #GroundhogDay. #TimMinchin #musical

Quick Summary - What's it about:
  • Phil Connors is a weather reporter, sent to the tiny town of “Punxsutawney” in Pennsylvania, covering the annual Groundhog Day – a tradition that sees a big rodent predict the end of winter.
  • Trapped in a cycle of arrogance, womanising and career frustrations, Phil repeats his “Groundhog Day” for weeks, with no ability to end it.
  • With no choice but to relive the same day, Phil’s character develops when he becomes romantically interested in his producer.
  • Musical numbers represent in this masterpiece, the best in our opinion being the visit to the alternative medicine specialists.

Why go?
  1. This is musical theatre at its finest. Sharp, honest and likely to be a hit both sides of the Atlantic within the decade, Groundhog Day is Tim Minchin at his finest.
  2. Andy Karl delivers what must be a VERY confusing (for the cast) dialogue flawlessly. Perfect comic timing with great music.
  3. The Old Vic has a hit on its hands, and this WILL be a sell-out. Go see it!
  4. It's a feel good show - you won't be disappointed and can be assured of a great night!
